About Chazy Lake
Chazy Lake is located in Clinton County in the Town of Dannemora. The Lake’s watershed is located in the Adirondack Mountains in the St. Lawrence River drainage system. Elevations within the watershed range from 1541 feet at the surface of the Lake to 3820 feet above sea level.
The Lake has a surface area of 1606 acres and a steeply sloping watershed of 14,085 acres. Chazy Lake has a maximum depth of 21.9 meters (72 feet) and a mean depth of 10.1 meters (33 feet). The Lake is approximately 3.5 miles long by 1.5 miles at its widest point. The littoral zone[1] of the Lake extends to a depth of approximately 19 feet. Located on the northern margin is the only outlet, which is dammed and used to maintain Lake level. The Lake bottom slopes rapidly away from the shoreline in most places, with limited areas for the growth of aquatic plants [1] The littoral zone is the near shore area where sunlight penetrates all the way to the sediment and allows aquatic plants (macrophytes) to grow. Light levels of about 1% or less of surface values usually define this depth. |
